Does US Copyright Apply Internationally?
Whether you're a songwriter, composer, recording artist, record label, publisher, or independent rights holder, it's crucial to know the extent of your copyright protection in foreign countries. The United States Copyright Office (USCO) offers a resource on copyright agreements that the US has with over 100 countries. These agreements provide increased protections to works registered with the USCO. However, it's important to note that copyright protection varies from country to country, and there is no "international copyright." The protection offered by international agreements can vary significantly, and some countries may have additional requirements for protection. Our Copyrighting service provides expert registration with the United States Copyright Office as it provides the best level of protection for most clients. If you have concerns about protection in a foreign country, however, we recommend contacting that country's copyright authority or a legal expert familiar with that country's copyright laws.
