What Kind of Licensing Do I Need For My Remix?
The term "remix" is a broadly used term in the music industry. Sometimes your remix may be licensed through our Cover Song Licensing, other times it may require direct permission from the copyright holders through our Custom Licensing. Before we can license your remix of a song, we have to figure out exactly how you're remixing that song. We also have to determine whether you're using just the original musician's Musical Composition, or if you're using their unique Sound Recording as well. (Any time you use their Sound Recording, you also use their Musical Composition.)
This article will outline possible ways to license your remix, but if you have further questions you can contact Easy Song today or call 1-800-360-5192 to speak with a licensing expert for free!
Can I License My Remix Through Cover Song Licensing?
Our Cover Song Licensing service follows the Compulsory Mechanical Licensing Law of the United States, so that you can get permission to release your recording quickly and easily without needing direct permission from the rights holder. However, there are some limitations in the law that we cannot go outside of - otherwise the license is invalid.
Cover Song Licensing only covers you if:
- You did not change the existing lyrics on your recording,
- You did not change the fundamental melody of the song,
- You are not sampling any music or using karaoke tracks,
- You are reproducing all the instrumentals and vocals yourself.
- The intended use is for private listening by the end user.
Please note that a compulsory mechanical license does not cover other licensing permissions such as: Synchronization (Video / Films), Master Use (Audio you do not own), Derivative / Adaptations (Altered or Original Lyrics / Melody)
For more information, see Compulsory Mechanical Licensing Law.
Can I License My Remix Through Custom Licensing?
If you believe your remix goes outside of the limitations stated above, or if you are using any part of the original Sound Recording, we always recommend to get direct permission. It is the only sure-fire way to know you are covered, and the way to do this is through our Custom Licensing services. Our team can consult with you, prepare your request, negotiate with any and all copyright holders that you need permission from, and finalize your licensing deals so that you are covered from start to finish!
If you're uncertain, you can always send us an email or give us a call (1-800-360-5192) and one of our licensing agents will be happy to answer any questions you have. For more information, click here.
