What Are Public Performance Rights?

Public Performance Rights give you permission to play or perform a song in public that someone else wrote. They pay royalties to the composer or their publisher. All public performance rights in the United States are handled by three performance rights organizations, or PROs - ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC. 

How Does Public Performance Licensing Work?

Public Performance Rights are granted through blanket licenses from the PROs. Any venue or business seeking a blanket license must pay a fee to each PRO in order to publicly perform songs from their respective catalogs. In most cases, individual artists do not need to obtain a PRO License for their songs since the venue they are performing at would already have a blanket license in place.
