What Is an IPI Number?

An IPI number is an Interested Party Information number used as way to uniquely identify a songwriter, composer, lyricist, or publisher who may own rights to a piece of music. IPI numbers are used primarily by Performing Rights Organizations (PROs) who collect public performance royalties on behalf of rightsholders, and can be found on most PROs' public catalog searches like BMI's Songview and ASCAP's Repertory Search.
